JAAF HOSTS SPARK PHILIPPINES’ BACK-TO-BACK EVENTS

JAAF hosted the premiere screening of Sine Nina last 18 October at Gateway Cineplex 6.  The event was part of SPARK! Philippines’ series of activities celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child, an annual event held every October 11. Sine nINA harnessed the remarkable power of storytelling to create a powerful biographical film, directed by the talented Carmen del Prado. It vividly portrayed the journeys of remarkable young Filipino women from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Over one hundred students from various Quezon City public schools were in attendance.  They had the opportunity to meet four young Filipinas who are featured in the film: Maricar Roque from Bataan, Robyn Mijares from Las Piñas, Chriscel Faith Aniñon from Cebu, and Iris Trixie Miras from Butuan. Following the screening, the four inspiring young women, along with Sony Music’s singer-songwriter Hazel Faith, engaged in a panel discussion. They shared their experiences and insights about their involvement in the initiative and the crucial importance of advancing girls’ rights and welfare.

The following day, JAAF hosted the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) at Gateway Gallery at the Main Hall of the Gallery. After 3 months of online training and in-person coaching, 39 women graduated from the AWE last 19 October 2023. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Joy Belmonte and Mona Celine Yap of Quezon City Government, and Christine Diane Romero of J. Amado Araneta Foundation – JAAF.  Pauline Anderson of the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines delivered a partner message via video.

Prior to graduation, the women participated in a pitching competition in which they presented their businesses and business ideas before a panel of experienced entrepreneurs. Three women were awarded cash prizes for their pitches.  With the support of the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines and American Spaces Philippines, AWE gives enterprising women the knowledge, networks, and access they need to launch and scale successful businesses through a hybrid model that combines the online platform ‘DreamBuilder’ with in-class mentoring and facilitation. AWE promotes women’s economic opportunities and ensures that women have the capabilities and resources needed to participate in the economy.

AWE is a project of SPARK Philippines, with the support of the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines, American Spaces Philippines, the Quezon City Government, the Quezon City Small Business Development and Promotion Office, with the support of J. Amado Araneta Foundation.
